MCC Urges Nicaraguan Government to Respect Democracy

Agency holds future disbursements for all projects not under contract

Washington, DC — Ambassador John Danilovich, Chief Executive Officer of the United States’ Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), yesterday expressed his deep concern and disappointment over the events surrounding the municipal elections in Nicaragua and has ordered the agency to reevaluate its $175 million aid package.

“We had hoped, for the sake of the Nicaraguan people, that the government would continue the country’s trend towards peaceful, democratic and credible elections,” Ambassador Danilovich said. “I am afraid recent evidence shows that this is not the case.”

“I am not satisfied that the electoral process in Nicaragua has been conducted in accordance with the principles upon which MCC awards and delivers grants to reduce poverty,” Ambassador Danilovich added. “This fundamental commitment to democracy is critical because MCC has determined that our funds are most effective when we partner with governments who are governing justly, investing in their own people and committed to economic freedom — and free and fair elections are a cornerstone of that.”

As a result of the actions of the Government of Nicaragua, MCC will not approve disbursements for any projects or activities not already contracted by MCA-Nicaragua, the entity that implements the program, until further notice.

“I am very concerned about the impacts any holds on our program will have on Nicaragua’s poor, so it is taken very seriously and with the hope that the Nicaraguan government will do all it can to reestablish what has been an effective partnership” said Ambassador Danilovich.

MCC is concerned about the Government’s actions, which limited the activity of the political opposition, civil society, media and election observers prior to the elections, and MCC is disappointed that the electoral results have been certified despite serious concerns regarding electoral irregularities.

“We call on the government to return to democratic norms and respect for the democratic process,” said Ambassador Danilovich. “In the coming weeks, MCC will continue to monitor the situation and MCC’s Board of Directors will discuss recent events and the next steps for Nicaragua’s eligibility and program at our December 11th meeting.”

Requirements for a country to be eligible for MCC assistance include a commitment to policies that promote political and economic freedom, investments in people, control of corruption, and respect for civil liberties and the rule of law, as measured by 17 independent policy indicators.

MCC is currently funding a $175 million poverty reduction grant with Nicaragua, which provides direct assistance to some of the poorest regions, and promotes long-term development goals. The five-year grant, signed July 14, 2005, seeks to support those living in the Departments of Leon and Chinandega by significantly increasing incomes of rural farmers and entrepreneurs. The compact is designed to reduce transportation costs, improve access to markets, strengthen property rights, increase investment, and raise incomes for farms and rural businesses.

  1. Sadly this is happening. Who will suffer for it? The majority of poor people in Nicaragua´s soil. But I am glad this is happening. It should happen. None in Europe or any other part of the world should send a penny to the government of Nicaragua.

We already have a DICTATORSHIP of the worst kind. No Human Rights are respected. The Municipal Elections have been nothing but the biggest fraude ever. Followed by the VIOLENCE OF THE HORDES paid by the tyran….

Nothing has been done to improve the living conditions of the 65% of the population (under the limit of poverty). The millions from <chavez are being spent on Jet flights for the goberning family… The posters (worth thousand of dollars) all over Managua to show the horrible face of the dictator…

Hasta cuando? Good the Millenium is not getting to Nicaragua. Nothing should. May God help us to see a better day so we can all celebrate OUR LINDA NICARAGUA….

  3. Hello, regarding NIcaragua’s living conditions, is like to hesitate that we are as well than never, on the contrary since Daniel and witch( Rosario) won the presidential election in 2006 our lives for those who want to see a true democracy, freedom of expression, free strike throughout of the country without any problem, to get better opportunity jobs to improve our lives along with many other hard global economy collapsing day after, and this not serious goverment is saying that they don’t care if US withdrawal the aid to Nicaragua, no thinking that who suffers such situations are the poorest people that represent 85% of population. Who will come to rescues from Ortega’s clotches and partners? we do not stand to be living on that conditions. Daniel is to guard for all of us, but he is more interested to promote his dictatorship plans toward the future, controlling at the same way, the four estates’ powers, there are political pursing, harrassment for all those who don’t think same to Ortega and his partisans.
I do not what that MCC Millenium Challenge Corporation widrawal its aid to Nicaragua, however all the world know that Daniel stole the municipal elections of November 9th-2008, and he arranged so that everything resulted to his pleasing. and part of the conditions of MCC is to have free and fair elections, respecting the People’s will, being soveign after all.

Until when we have to stand living like if country belonged to Daniel Ortega-…….he can do whater he wants, Daniel is a crazy, illiterate person who does not know how to rule his house neither, he is not a stateman, although he does not know what does it mean? God has pity on us, and lets us to be protected by his mercy and love. Daniel Ortega is the worst kind of goverment that Nicaragua has had since we are republic……Daniel is forgetting how many young people he sent to die on the 80’s civil war in Nicaragua, in all pacific 0and Atlantic area, being many of them killed by them, tortured and sentenced to dele any kind of aid if they did not submit to his willing………………and Daniels forgets that by his fault the Nicaragua’s economy was so crashed that the inflation fell down up to 30,000 %…….such thing never seen into the world but Daniel ortega won the novel prize for destroying and rot the economy, his marxist’s belief made him to offend the catholic faith, offending the Pope Juan Pablo II, how terrible has been for all of us to be living again and seeing the person who carried that plan out and trying to come again with the same target…………….. Nicaraguan people are honest, worker, reponsible, humble society. We have to fight to defend our human rights and never give-up does not matter what is yet to come upon us…….

    God bless Nicagua……….
